For anyone who missed it, Teresa Nielsen Hayden (http://www.nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/) reported that children in East Timor, in order to avoid unpleasant sociolinguistics issues, are learning Finnish. (The original report. Thanks also to [livejournal.com profile] joxn for first bringing this to my attention.)

The thing that's even more amusing than the fact that they're using Finnish as an international language is that, ten or twelve years ago, some linguists at Stanford suggested this very thing.
