Searching on Stevenson turned up the fact that the road built to his house was called the "Road of Loving Hearts," and searching that phrase got me a web page telling me that it was discussed in Kinky Friedman's G-d Bless John Wayne, which is somehow not quite Somerset Maughm, as was suggested, but hey.
