Enigmarch, Day 1: DOOR
Mar. 3rd, 2024 10:57 amRemember a year ago, when I wrote Turns out I haven't posted since April 2013. Huh.? Well, turns out I haven't posted since last March, when I made it 2/3 of the way through Enigmarch. So now, let's try it again!
I'm a couple of days behind, because I went to sleep very early on the 1st and was out of town for the entirety of the 2nd. Nevertheless, here's Enigmarch 1: DOOR.
What's Behind the Door?
Wandering lost in the woods, I found myself approaching a wall, with two sentries. "Ah," I thought, "this one": except that there was only a single portal, and both were standing in front of it, bickering.
When I was almost upon them, one held up a hand, as if to say "Halt!". Needless to say, I halted.
"Naturally," said the other, "you will want to pass through our door. No person alive, other than the two of us, knows what is on the other side."
The first said, "A great geas has been set upon us ever since we became the guardians of the door. One of us tells the truth every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, and lies otherwise."
"Stupid door thinks it's so smart," muttered the second.
"The other," continued the first, "tells the truth from noon to midnight, and lies otherwise. And while he knows what is behind the door, his companion does not." (I should note that I had been wandering so long I no longer knew what time it was, or even what day it was.)
"You get one question," said the second. "And then you must tell us what is behind the door. Influence? Power? Money? Tiger? Could be anything."
"Of course, there's a catch," said the first. (I think it was the first. They looked identical and kept moving around.) "The door needs constant watching, so if you guess incorrectly, you will be forced to join us."
"Ask your question, and then tell us what lies beyond—or forever become one of the door guardians yourself!" cried the second.
I gave them a few seconds, but they remained silent. So I turned to walk away, saying, "Oh, please. I already know what's on the other side. Have fun, you two."
