There. I'm now caught up on about a week of unread Livejournal. Except that I wasn't logged in. If anyone has posted a friends-only post in the last week that I ought to see, please, point me to it.

A few meme things: who are you people with interests that are universal, or indeed, even common or specialized? All of mine are "Unusual":

"bosnian lesbian pirate cult (12), cryptic crosswords (143), cty (760), mystery hunt (28), npl (25), otherworld (144)"--and most of the people with "Otherworld" as an interest seem to bear no real relation to my interest in it. Not that I'm very surprised that "bosnian lesbian pirate cult" is uncommon, but it is a shame.

The interests of my dissertation blog are both a little more common and a little less. "Linguistics" rings in with 8476 users, "MIT" has 618 and "semantics" 938. But most of the interests are rare: dissertating (8), formal semantics (7), lambdas (6), formal linguistics (2), and concealed questions (1).

In other meme news:

Name a CD you own that no one else on your friends list does:

I don't think anyone else on my friends list owns Steven Brust's A Rose for Iconoclastes? Stop me if I'm wrong. Edit: I was wrong. Mendoza, who I forgot was lurking on my friends list, does own this. Must remember to look at my friends list more carefully. All right...how about Stan Freberg Presents the United States of America? ("We going out on that joke?" "No, we do reprise of song. That help...but not much, no.") Edit #2: OK, perhaps the third time is a charm? This is what happens when you don't actually own much music. I'm running out of likely options. Perhaps Veggie Tales's Silly Songs with Larry (Edit: apparently not.)? Failing that, Live From The River Music Hall - Version 2.0?

Name a book you own that no one else on your friends list does:

As with many of my friends, this is easy for an academic, since I don't think anyone out there has David Dowty's Meaning in Montague Grammar (Edit: man, who let the linguists onto my friends list?). But in terms of books you could conceivably own, why do you none of you have Janet Kagan's Hellspark? Edit: to my surprise, Kirbyk has this one. What about Kurt Vonnegut's Happy Birthday, Wanda June?

Name a movie you own on DVD/VHS/whatever that no one else on your friends list does:

I don't really own movies, but I somehow don't think anyone out there bothered to buy Deep Impact. (Neither did I. But I own it.) (Edit: Wow. I think I got lucky on this one.)

Name a place that you have visited that no one else on your friends list has:

I don't really tend to go visiting places. I'll take a chance, though, and say the Basketball Hall of Fame. Edit: Clearly not. And I know Lawrence, Kansas isn't unique. How about Muncie, Indiana?

I do. Surprised?

Forgive my unworthiness, however, as I have not yet listened to it. I

Ha, I do have Hellspark. It's nifty.

I picked up her Trek novel, too, Uhura's Song. It's probably pretty good for a Trek novel, but it's clearly the source of a lot of ideas that are done much better, later, in Hellspark, so I would recommend people skip it and go straight to the original followup work.

It's a shame that nearly nobody else figured out that Uhura was a linguist, though, and that this was interesting.

Only surprised to find you on my friends list! I'd quite forgotten...but, no, not surprised that you own it, certainly.

I don't own that Freberg album, just his Greatest Hits. Should I own that one?

I drove by the Basketball Hall of Fame fairly regularly for nearly three years, but never actually visitted it.

I've never seen his greatest hits--is it worth getting?

...America is certainly funny; volume 1 somewhat more consistently than volume 2, but both to some extent. I don't listen to it much--because I typically listen to music when working, at which point I want something backgroundy, and humor doesn't work well for that--but it's worth hearing.

Greatest Hits features the following:
St. George and the Dragonet [Dragnet parody]
John and Marsha [Freberg's take on soap operas]
Wun'erful, Wun'erful (Parts 1&2)
Try
I've Got You Under My Skin
Little Blue Riding Hood
The Yellow Rose of Texas
Banana Boat (Day-O)
The World Is Waiting For the Sunrise
Heartbreak Hotel

It's pretty funny. I'm fond of Yellow Rose (with the rebellious snare drummer) and Banana Boat ("It's too piercing"). Come down for the Halloween Foo, bring ...America, and we'll subject the rest of the guests to some Freberg...

Ah--I haven't heard the whole album, I don't think, but I have definitely heard the first two. (...America also has a rebellious snare drummer, oddly enough.

Alas, I can't make it down to the Halloween Foo--I'm busy getting married that weekend--but perhaps next time.

Believe it or not, the summer I spent in New York included a trip to the Basketball and Football Halls of Fame on the way home. (:

And I, believe it or not, have indeed been to the Basketball Hall of Fame. And also the most pathetic zoo in the world, also in Springfield.

Does a cassette tape of Silly Songs with Larry count? Although I don't count, since I'm not on your friends list.

And I own a David Dowty book on Montague grammar. Not sure if it's the one you cited, though. It's in a box somewhere.
