I feel so stupid doing this, and yet, well, here I am.

I'm going to be at a conference in Oakland from January 6-9, 2005. (Note to potential burglars: don't bother. My wife will still be in the apartment. And our vicious underfed attack dog.) The thing is that, being a poor graduate student, I'd prefer to avoid having to pay $100/night for a room at this thing. Which leads me to wonder: is there anyone within earshot who (a) lives within a reasonable distance of downtown Oakland (e.g. via BART) and (b) wouldn't mind a non-troublesome house guest for a few nights?

I know, I know, it seems terribly unlikely, especially given the percentage of my friends list who lives on the East Coast. (And outside the East Coast, there's another chunk who are in Michigan or Colorado or other similarly random places, no offense, they're great places, but to be honest, from here, they're a little random as places go.) But it's worth a shot, no?

If you don't find anything else, you can often get a room at the Berkleley Doubletree Marina by bidding $45/night on priceline.com.

Hmmm. I can think of lots of us who are not so far from Oakland and like you, but none who have crash space offhand. Do you know Air? Merlin and Lynette? (while I don't know that they have space, I don't know that they *don't*, unlike me.)

And if that's a weekend, are you interested in meeting folks for dinner?

Sadly, I'm in a studio, so not really crash space available. But a dinner thing would be cool!

Merlin and Lynette are in San Jose, which is not particularly convenient to Oakland. :)

Hi there! Kim and I live somewhat nearby (San Mateo); we'll send you an e-mail with more details.

We're about 20 minutes from Oakland (Walnut Creek) and have a double-sized futon. But there's a toddler and 5 cats to contend with.

We're directly across from the Pleasant Hill BART I forgot to mention.

Tahnan may try to conduct linguistic experiments on your toddler if he stays over. Not that this is a bad thing. I have fond memories of explaining that mine really did refer to markers as "home movies", having watched more than her share of Rugrats.

Sadly, neither Sebastopol nor Davis dit the bill, otherwise I'd help you out. If you want to take a wine country vacation away from it all, though....

A dinner thing would be cool--I'm not sure what my schedule will be like, and much of my time may be taken up with networking. I am out there trying to get a job, after all. My flight leaves lateish on Sunday after the conference, though...once I have a better idea of what my schedule is, I'll post accordingly.
