My high school alumni magazine has announced the birth of

Duncan Gray Smith, September 29, 2006, the son of Steve and Julia Gray Smith

The important thing here isn't that Julia Gray has a son--well, OK, it's important to her, and I do care, I suppose, but that's not why I bring it to your attention. The important thing here is that once upon a time, by which I mean like "last year", this would have been announced as

Duncan Gray Smith, September 29, 2006, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Smith (Julia Gray),

as if Steve Smith (whoever he may be) is the important factor here and, oh, yes, perhaps we should mention that Julia Gray, who you went to high school with, was somehow involved. This change is...well, OK, so there's still a list in here of the speakers at Christian Emphasis Week, and the motto of the school is still Luke 2:52 (look it up), but it's one more step towards the 21st century, and even a step so small was one I wasn't sure the school would ever take.

(Oh, and, hey, congrats, Julia. Also in this issue: cute picture of the exling.)

I'm being fundraised as a guy now. I'm not sure this is progress, given that they have no way of sending me mail without a gendered title. But you're right--- small progress.

(I was entertaining a brief fantasy the other day about speaking at chapel, just to watch jaws drop.)
