Just 'cause I can. I was thinking about the last time I posted a lyrics meme, in which I'd scrambled words, and it was clear (from one solver's comments on mine, and from my own experience with marfta's version) that in some cases, a single word or two was enough to give away the song (e.g. "Stockbridge"). Sometimes a single word doesn't actually uniquely identify a song (e.g. "Stockbridge"), but perhaps with two words, you can manage a lyricwhack: like a Googlewhack, two words that only appear together in one song.

It's amazing how many of the following words aren't unique on their own (for instance, my graduate school colleague Bridget had a mix tape with two different songs containing the word "miscreation"), but with luck, each one of the following is a lyricwhack. And I mostly stayed away from obscure words: no Sinead Lohan, no Nickel Creek.

Post what you like; people who care to "solve" this, you've been warned that the comments may contain spoilers.

  1. psychosomatic, streptococci
  2. insomnia, miscreation
  3. cocky, rowboat
  4. overcome, transistor
  5. mono, verge
  6. merengue, refined
  7. continental, louses
  8. chunder, vegemite
  9. archetype, geographic
  10. baffled, outdrew
  11. shimmering, steely
  12. fruitless, survival
  13. champagne, masculine
  14. kaleidoscope, plasticine
  15. concoction, shaker
  16. cloister, waistline
  17. tantric, wasabi
  18. disciples, replay
  19. illusions, stargazing
  20. narwhal, noseguard
  21. antiquated, chemicals
  22. cobblestones, tenement
  23. astounding, voyeuristic
  24. flashback, unwinds
  25. potions, sculptor
For convenience, the songs are listed in alphabetical order (articles ignored). The two words from each song are also listed in alphabetical order, not necessarily the order in which they appear in the song.

1. "Adelaide's Lament," Guys and Dolls
8. "Land Down Under"?
14. "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds"
19. "The Rainbow Connection"
23. "Time Warp"
24. "Time After Time"?

There are a couple others I feel I should know but am not coming up with immediately.

I am pretty sure that 2. is "Are you Out There?" by Dar Williams and 17. is "One Week" by BNL.

2. Are You Out There, Dar Williams
17. One Week, Barenaked Ladies

Yes, looking at saxikath's comment, 24 must be Time After Time.

Nicely done. I've always enjoyed songs that contain a word that I suppose to be unique among lyrics (with "streptococci" being one of my favorite examples), but using pairs of words turns it into a very nice puzzle.

In addition to several already correctly guessed, I know:

22. The Sound of Silence, Simon and Garfunkel
25. Your Song, Elton John

And, yeah, a lot of these others seem familiar, but I can't place them (yet).

2. Are You Out There - Dar Williams
8. Down Under - Men At Work
10. Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley (I don't think the Leonard Cohen version includes those verses...)
11. Hotel California - Eagles
12. In Your Eyes - Peter Gabriel
14. Lucy in The Sky With Diamonds - Beatles
17. One Week - Barenaked Ladies
22. Sound Of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel
23. Time Warp - Rocky Horror cast

I feel close on some of the others, but those are the only ones that leapt out at me. I'm pretty sure I don't know 20, but I think I want to!
