Things that make me happy, for no good reason at all:
  • Setting off down a snowy sidewalk and seeing a single set of footprints, heading in the same direction as you, shoe size perhaps a bit smaller, stride perhaps a bit smaller. And then matching the person's stride exactly, only where they stepped with the left foot, you step with the right, to the right of their print; and vice versa for the right foot; so that when you look back, the effect is of someone who took a long series of very short jumps down the sidewalk.

  • I used to live right here. Right there, I tell you!

  • The fact that someone dropped a button onto the Google Earth photo before it was scanned in and posted. Hee hee!

It's not that I'm easily amused. It's that the things that do amuse me, often amuse me deeply.

There was a chapter in one of the All-of-a-Kind Family books in which the mother got the girls to clean the parlor by hiding buttons. They had to dust in obscure places and find the buttons hidden there -- and sometimes there would be a penny, which they could keep if they found it.

It seems to me that there must be more buttons and button-like things to be found in Google Earth. Maybe you could write a treasure hunt. (Me? I already have a puzzle to write. I'm procrastinating on it right now, in fact.)

Are you sure it's not an actual giant button? Being right in the pathway like that makes it look more like an absurd art project to me.

See dtm's post below. In fact, that's in the middle of the quad; I don't quite have to pass it to get from my office to my classroom, but I see it across the way on pretty much a daily basis. So, yes, I knew that. :-)

You know what's sad, I clicked on the link and immediately recognized the button as being the stupid sculpture.

That giant button is the sculpture "split button" - that is, it's not an artifact of the picture scanning process as the giant bug in Germany (now removed) was.

It's as real as this Firefox logo captured on google maps.

See above. I know that giant button is really there. I see it regularly.

I was hoping to get a picture of Oldenburg's giant spoon in Minneapolis, but you can't zoom in enough to get an accurate photo, curse 'em.

There is a Boat about 50 feet from my old house in Milwaukee.
It's like some long and low-slung river barge boat, and it's literally buried up to the hull in the ground near the Univ of Wisc-Milwaukee. I loved giving people directions and telling them to "turn right at the boat.." It caused endless blank looks and giggling.
