Stupid, stupid world.

The American Crossword Puzzle Tournament is March 23-25. I'll be kind of sad if I don't go.

The Otherworld Fortunetide Ball is March 24. I'll be kind of sad if I don't go.

Which means that my options seem to be: (a) be sad; (b) be sad; (c) rent a car and leave the tournament as soon as puzzle 6 ends on Saturday and drive from Connecticut up to Massachusetts and go to the ball and then drive back that night. As options go, they all kind of suck.

Anyone out there already planning to go to both...?

Yes, but I really and truly fear that if I actually try to drive from Stamford to Woburn, I'll pretty much hate myself too. In fact, given where Stamford is--i.e., pretty near NYC--it's a three-hour drive. Which means I'd drive six hours for the chance to spend perhaps four in Woburn.

I'd do it, but I like to drive a lot more than you do. Three hours one way is pretty much right at my threshold for something like that though, so I can see the hate.

Could you skip the end of the tournament or does all the good stuff happen at the end?

The problem is that the tournament schedule is: puzzles 1-6 on Saturday, puzzle 7 on Sunday morning, the finals shortly after puzzle 7. I think it's just not gonna happen, alas.

Don't forget driving BACK for Puzzle 7, if you choose to do all the puzzles. I'd say skip Stamford, but since this looks like the last year we'll be there ...

Yeah, "drive back that night" is in there. I really don't think there's any chance of my being able to drive.

Hmmm. The other option is to stop off at Stamford on my way home and spend a few hours hanging out. But I bet I'll get in trouble for that, won't I.
