We have two old computers that have files stored on them--call them "Tower" and "Laptop". It would be really, really nice to not have to move Tower, because let's face it, it's a tower, it's bulky, it doesn't do anything but store files. (Laptop has a larger hard drive, and can support our printer because it's running Windows 2000--which should tell you something about the age of Tower.)

Unfortunately, we've got about 4.86 GB of files to move from Tower to Laptop. And Laptop, after I've gone through and deleted everything I feel I can safely delete, has 4.36 GB of space free.

Buy a hard drive enclosure for about $25. Take the hard drive out of the old tower and put it in the enclosure and you have a new external hard drive with the data you want to keep on it. It lets you chuck the rest of the tower now, and when you do have space in the future, you can retrieve the data, reformat the hard drive to get rid of everything else including the operating system, and you'll have yourself a new external hard drive for backup or storage or whatever. Easy short term solution, and useful in the long term.

Whoah. How old a computer is "too old" for that to work? I have a POS Mac clone circa probably 1994 which takes up an amount of space that's disproportionate to the amount of stuff on its hard drive that I want to keep...it'd be awesome if I could just keep the hard drive and chuck the rest.
