The problem with livejournal is that it has gotten me the habit of thinking that all journal entries are there to spark a discussion. So I go back and read semantic structures, and I find myself wanting to ask "I don't understand the thing you're saying about language there. Could you explain?" And wanting to argue "I don't think you're being fair to that book". Of course, if you wanted semantic structures to work like livejournal, you would put a comment option in. But I now have the habit. Oh well.
Of course, I have asked people to not quote parts of my passworded journal here for commenting, and I stand by that. But it's worth remembering that
(a) When I started Semantics Structures, livejournal was not the phenomenon it is now (it started six months before I did), nor was "blog" part of the common vocabulary; online journals were more like newspaper columns than lectures with a discussion section after; so I've never really thought about as being the sort of thing where you would, or even could, have a comment system; (b) I don't actually have the slightest idea how to go about adding a comments system to my journal; (c) I never mind posting reader mail in the next entry, which is like a comment system, just a little lower tech.
Heaven knows that I don't at all mind explaining that thing about language, whatever that thing about language might be. And, in fact, I wondered as I posted about Brown Girl in the Ring whether anyone generally (and jadelennox specifically) would say "You're not being fair to that book." I also thought about posting the comments here, or saying explicitly "Feel free to email me with thoughts," but figured people'd email anyway.
Should I set up a comments system? Is there a way to do so that won't confuse little old humanities-at-MIT me?
