Politics as unusual
Sep. 12th, 2008 03:59 amAnd, OK, something else that's pissing me off. I mean, bad enough that McCain is trying to run as an agent of change, which takes chutzpah when your party currently controls the White House. And Lord knows I'm irritated to see Palin praised for her lack of experience in Washington after Obama was criticized for that very thing. But then you've got Palin saying things like "We've got to remember what the desire is in this nation at this time. It is for no more politics as usual and somebody's big fat résumé that maybe shows decades and decades in that Washington establishment...", which is a particular expression of a recurring sentiment about Palin.
Let's be clear: there's been exactly one president in the last 32 years who had previously held any position in Washington—vice-president, Congressman, cabinet-level, anything at all. Sending someone to the White House who's a governor with no Washington experience is not change. It's practically business as usual. How is sending the outsider Palin to "shake up Washington" any different than sending the outsider Bush? Or Clinton, or Reagan, or Carter...?
I want the damned debates to have FactCheck.org doing a kind of "pop-up video" set of captions, supplying the facts so that neither side can get away with insane distortions of reality. Damn it.
