The NYT reports:
In a time-honored tradition of American democracy, Mr. Obama and his wife, Michelle, will receive a tour of their new home from Mr. Bush and the first lady, Laura Bush. Then the men will split off to begin the formal transfer of power...
Yeah, isn't that just the time-honored tradition.

(Or just go read Deep Secrets of the Daily Show. Don't miss the link to the Post's story about one of the real geniuses behind the show.)

Someday, we'll elect a woman president in this country, and this tradition won't involve the men splitting off.

It wasn't Hillary Clinton's time to be elected, but she made people seriously consider voting for a woman for president as much as Barack Obama made people consider voting for a black man. (And then, that other woman reminded us that it takes a certain kind of woman to be considered seriously as a candidate, in the same way that it takes a certain kind of man. But I digress.)

Oh, I know. Some day. All the same, I've heard a lot of people say that Obama's election proves that anyone really can grow up to be president, to which I've been thinking, "Oh certainly! Protestant men and Catholic men, white men and black men...anyone!" The unfortunate juxtaposition in the times of "the time-honored tradition" and "then the men went off to do the real talking" reminded me of that.
