Today, I received my (first!) passport in the mail. And just now, I have bought plane tickets to Frankfurt.

I've been out of the country twice, both times to Vancouver. And I haven't given all that many conference talks. So this is both exciting—and increasingly very scary.

Are you flying straight to Frankfurt, or changing en route?

Flying straight, thank heavens. Lufthansa flies directly from Philadelphia to Frankfurt (Hannover seems to be closer to Gottingen by perhaps an hour, but it seemed that to get to Hannover I'd have to fly through Frankfurt anyway).

Ah, if you'd been routing through London I'd've bought you a coffee (or similar) ;)

Oh that is so great! Please try to relax and have fun. I did not get to Europe until I was 50 but now I've been three times and would go again in a heartbeat. Different countries each trip; haven't seen Germany at all but hear it is amazing. The best of good fortune on your talk; I have every confidence that you will be your usual, brilliant, warm self.

Oh, and maybe you could connect with Uncanny who is not only living over there right now, but may so welcome a connect with an NPLer.

Yay! You are the awesomest! I've never been to Frankfurt, but I've heard good things. I'm sure everything will go brilliantly.

congrats on the invite! Gottingen is small but nice, very university-town-like (I was there for a conference a few years ago). Have fun!!

AWESOME! Also, I get the scary. If it's any comfort, I'm starting to think that terror is one of the necessary steps of certain types of fantastic experiences.

Oh wow, oh wow! First passport, hooray! Germany, hooray! Invited talk, hooray!

I don't know if you generally travel well or not, but Germany is very agreeable. Even the first time I went, when I spoke very little German (and now I only speak a bit more than a very little), cognates and sensible signage were my friends. How long will you be there?
