"All told, more than 3,000 suspected terrorists have been arrested in many countries. Many others have met a different fate. Let's put it this way, they are no longer a problem to the United States and our friends and allies."

Right around minute 29 at this recording (http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2002/01/20020129-11.html is the web page for the State of the Union address, including the transcript.) The written quote doesn't capture the grim cowboy expression though.

I might agree or disagree with many other points in the SotU, but this is the one that sticks with me. And it makes me ill.

Conspiracy to censor?

Okay, now I feel less paranoid.

I checked out the links you provided for the media clip and transcript, and was at first puzzled, then bemused, then suspicious when minute 29 wasn't even remotely about terrorism. Nowhere in the transcript could I find a mention of the figure 3,000.

Had the whitehouse decided it was an unfortunate phrase, and removed it from the written text and media clip? Surely not.

I searched on the web for the text you quoted, and found it on other news sites. I started to compare their texts to the whitehouse one to discover the extent of the editing out. It looked like it was more and more extensive...

...until I glanced at the top of the page you linked to, and saw "January, 2002".

Whew. Different speech. But not discovered until I'd listened to a full 10 minutes AND missed the chance of getting home in time for "Friends" :) Oh, well...

Ah hell. The page I cited was in fact the first page that came up on Google, and I too listened to it for a minute before saying, "This isn't the SotU I recall," and tried the link on that page for the "state of the union home page." The page I meant to link to is

http://www.whitehouse.gov/stateoftheunion/index.html (http://www.whitehouse.gov/stateoftheunion/index.html)

Although http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/01/20030128-19.html (http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2003/01/20030128-19.html) has the transcript as well as the link to the video.
