In case you missed the announcement, Grinnell College has chosen a new president. That's not really all that extraordinary on its own, except that, to quote the aforelinked press release: "Dr. [Raynard] Kington, his partner, Peter T. Daniolos M.D., a child psychiatrist at Children’s National Medical Center and George Washington University, and their two young children plan to move to Grinnell during the summer and make the president’s residence at the College their home."

Go Iowa!

So I read the Inside Higher Ed bit on this, and I think I was more surprised by the fact that he's a high-flying bio/health person who's moving to the middle of nowhere, Iowa, rather than the fact that he's black/gay.

Not so much "black/gay" as gay with children. And as much as anything, it's a pleasant reflection on the progress of the world.

I looked briefly into his history (because I'm tired of university presidents coming from businesses), and noted he was coming from NIH, but didn't especially think about the fact. But I figure that getting the heck out of government is often a good move, and I get the impression that he's been more of an administrator than a researcher in his time at the NIH in any case.

Well, I can think of at least one thing about Iowa that might make it attractive to this particular couple of highfalutin' east coast doctors....

... and north of the border, Minnesota is getting ready to start thinking about talking about it, which I guess is a step in the right direction: http://minnesotaindependent.com/55469/same-sex-marriage-to-get-historic-hearing-at-minnesota-capitol

I miss Minnesota, the state whose slogan when Operation Rescue arrived to campaign against abortion was "Keep Minnesota Nice" (http://fallenstein.com/tshirts_mn_nice.html). I had a few bad years there, but it's a, well, a nice place.

It may say even more that I didn't even know what you were getting at until I read the comments. "What, do you know his partner or something?"
