Because it's a great article, and comes with great sound clips (and video): Getting Naked Every Night (safe for work; "naked" is metaphorical), part of a series on Slate about risk.

Because it's a terrible but inevitable thing: an (American-born, not that it matters) truck driver in Arizona is detained until his wife shows up with his birth certificate.

And because it makes me feel better about hating capitalism, the rejected Fortune 500 cover. I can't imagine why Fortune wouldn't have wanted it.

Thanks for the Girlyman article! So interesting. (Especially all of the stuff about how much of a departure Everything's Easy was for them. It was their first album I didn't like -- I listened a couple of times, shrugged, and never went back. But I guess I'm glad not everyone felt that way.)

Me, too! I like a lot of the songs from it, like the title track and Easy Bake Ovens and Storms Were Mine, but...I recall listening to it once through and thinking that it just didn't hold up as well, album-wise.

I think it's interesting that the truck driver's wife is quoted as saying that she's carrying their Social Security cards around. If I remember correctly, the card specifically says that you should *not* carry it on your person. Next anyone who might be considered to look Mexican is going to be required to have a passport (in his pocket at all times) because it's the only viable form of photo ID (as this story shows, a driver's license isn't enough). Sheesh.
