A few random puzzles from the past week: I attended a couple of different parties, and so I wrote Sara's 32 for Sara's birthday party and the rather badly-named _malorm, _lagell, & _ingatent for a gathering of my Mystery Hunt team. (Our plans to win next year: (a) invade Setec, commandeer their alcohol, dress them in loincloths, chain them to desks, and force them to solve all the puzzles for us; and (b) clone Andy and Arielle.)

Also, people seem to enjoy Book Reviews By My Cat, a short quiz I wrote for Sporcle.

Finally, a quick yearly shoutout to former classmates Kate Guyton and Linnaea Stockall. They're not reading, but who knows, they might have a Google Alert for their names. (Speaking of which, I also want to offer a brief defense of classism in honor of Mr. Shet—oops, water boiling, must run.)

You shall not have our booze! We'll loan you a cloning vat instead...

You say that. But when we invade and conquer you, we can just take the cloning vat by force!

Tell you what. Surrender the vat, half your booze, and videos of your team in loincloths, and we'll hold off on invading. (I need to check with the rest of my team to confirm that this is acceptable. We might also need to see a team roster; if I recall correctly, there are a few people on your team for whom mere loincloth-clad videos will be insufficient.)

Based on past experience, you're more likely to get a video with loincloths that are made of alcoholic beverage containers and transport materials.

I can see why! That was a lot of fun. (I got 10/12 before resorting to Google to satisfy my curiosity about the remaining two.)

Thanks! It's so hard to predict what people will like. I mean, when it comes to puzzles; but that's probably generally pretty true.

Why would we solve all the puzzles for YOU, if we're not even willing to do that for ourselves?

And yeah. Just TRY and take my share of the booze, buster. See how far you get with that plan.

We know the invasion won't be easy. On the other hand, more of us are local, and it's hard carrying swords and axes on planes, so we're feeling fairly confident.

But as for the first point, you're not fooling us for a second. We know how well Setec does every year. You'll solve, all right. Between us standing over you with whips, and the natural inclination of puzzlers to solve puzzles...I mean, are you telling me that if I put a Mystery Hunt puzzle in front of Kiran, and Kiran was actively trying to keep from solving it, we'd nevertheless make it an hour before hearing "Wait, I think I see what to do here"?

I got all your cat's book reviews! Well, I had to google two of them (Harry Potter and the T S Eliot), but I got all the others, I'm very proud of myself.

I support the cloning plan. They're my favorites.

I support cloning Arielle, assuming her clone would be willing to cook for me every night. (Except those nights Evon does, naturally.)

I made your cat quiz my Cool Friend's Cool Thing #179 on Facebook. That is some whiskery goodness.
