If you've got an hour to kill, the platform of the Iowa Republican Party makes for fascinating reading. I'm fascinated by some of the contradictory planks: "In the eyes of God, all men are created equal" and "The proper role of government is to protect equal rights", and yet "We call for the repeal of sexual orientation in the Iowa Civil Rights Code". "Life" is a god-given right, and yet "health care is a privilege and not a right".

A few of the positions seem like they ought to be awfully unpopular ("We oppose agricultural subsidies and manipulation of commodity prices by government"—in a state that, according to this site, received $20 billion in subsidies over the last fifteen years, encompassing 81% of the farmers in the state). And there's the usual political nonsense you see in any party's platforms. For instance, they oppose the Amero, a single North American currency, which is great, though of course that's true of pretty much everyone else in North America. There's a lot of English-first nonsense (again, though they want government to get the hell out of education decisions, they also want to stop bilingual education). And hey, look, they oppose flag-burning and want a return to the gold standard!

The plank not to miss, though, is the one concerning restoration of the real Thirteenth Amendment.
