All right, look. There's this book I read. In it, the narrator speaks frequently, more than once, about Robert Louis Stevenson and his time in Samoa. How the natives loved him. How he helped build a road there. This is probably a metaphor for something, but I cannot recall what.

What book is this?

It's not Ian McEwan's Enduring Love is it? I have _no_ idea why that popped into my head but it certainly has a narrative style that would allow it... what kind of book, anyway?
