WTF, France?

tahnanOK, seriously, in the last week France has (a) been revealed to be expelling the Roma and (b) approved a bill (246 to 1) banning facial veils in public. Do I really need to stop drinking wine and start eating Freedom Fries?
Edited to add this line from a CNN article: "The measure would take effect six months after passage, giving authorities time to try to persuade women who veil themselves voluntarily to stop." I've tried three times now to express what's wrong with the latter half of that sentence, and I just can't find the words. Screw "Freedom Fries"; I need to stop reading anything on CNN.
