jangler pointed out to me that I had a letter wrong. It was SHOW ME THE MANET, crossed by the antelope NYALA (and not NYOLA as I more or less guessed/assumed).
So in fact the phonetics were not only worse than I thought, they were worse than they should have been; and the ambiguous letter was crossed with a needlessly obscure word. I wonder if Mark Danna wanted it to be MONET and then couldn't get anything to cross it, and figured it wouldn't matter if he changed it?
Man I hate that crossword. Life is too short for bad art.
