Aunt Hildegarde, in puzzles, is notoriously fickle in her likes and dislikes. For instance, after she visited cousin Meg, she started to prefer desserts to appetizers, enjoy golf more than baseball, and adopted a dog instead of a cat. That's because, like "Meg", all of her new preferences were words that remained words when reversed.
Last year I visited Hildegarde and her eleven sisters, each one on her birthday. It shouldn't be too hard to determine the order of my visits, and to derive a final, nine-letter answer.
Aunt Agnes... likes bases but dislikes acids. likes bats but dislikes wolves. prefers her pitcher to her teapot. would rather walk than stroll.
Aunt Betty... prefers "Material Girl" to "Like a Virgin". favors meatballs over spaghetti. uses metaphors but never similes. likes teamsters but dislikes steelworkers.
Aunt Constance... measures in degrees instead of radians. wears a holster but not a sheath. likes sultanas but dislikes raisins. prefers warthogs to meerkats.
Aunt Dolores... eats abalone but not oysters. would root for a cyclops against a chimera. reads memoirs but not fiction. listens to Vivaldi but never Debussy.
Aunt Edna... eats clover honey but not lavender. will use a coupon but not a gift card. likes plots that are linear, not convoluted. uses tomato but never radish.
Aunt Ethel... prefers beauty to truth. cooks with bouillon, not consommé. would date a lieutenant but never a colonel. thinks pirouettes are better than jétés.
Aunt Hildegarde... admires the Bedouin more than the Romani. will talk to a curator but not a docent. visits Oregon but not Idaho. buys manure instead of fertilizer.
Aunt Irene... uses acronyms, never initialisms. enjoys amateurs more than professionals. listens to Buddy Holly but not The Big Bopper. prefers Robert Mitchum to Humphrey Bogart.
Aunt Josephine... tunes into Dateline NBC but skips 60 Minutes. reads Le Monde but ignores Die Welt. writes limericks but never haiku. wears plumes, never feathers.
Aunt Olive... visits Kalamazoo but avoids Detroit. uses mademoiselle instead of miss. enjoys Senegalese food more than Cape Verdean. favors Sotomayor over Kagan.
