Um, folks, I hate to ask this, and I wish I had a better place to put it than here where it can be seen by people who don't read my passworded journal, but it needs to be said somewhere....

Could people who read my other journal please not quote it here, even in comments on this journal? You may recall that my journal there is passworded for a reason. I would hate to write there "What a jerk my phrenology professor, Dr. Hausenpfeffer, has turned out to be!", knowing it is a safe place where Dr. Hausenpfeffer won't find it, only to have someone post it in a comment here.

Commenting on my other journal here is...a little dicey, but possibly OK if you're oblique. There are three possible workarounds for all this:

(a) Suggest a way to set up comments on Semantic Structures;
(b) Send me email with a comment, which I'll happily post in my next entry; or
(c) Ask me if I could repeat a given section here, so that you can comment on it.

I hate to do this, but, well, I feel I have to before something goes terribly wrong and I feel I have to stop having a public journal. Or even a passworded one.

Just curious

And seeing as how I'm completely not guilty of leaking stuff, I feel free to ask - what's the advantage of the passworded journal, over using Livejournal friends-only (or slightly more complicated subsets of friends, which I believe is supported?) I know it's at least partly because the old journal predates your usage of livejournal significantly, but is there more?

Honestly, it's not that I don't find you, or Angie, or Liralen, or anyone else who has a non-livejournal journal interesting. It's that I'd never keep up with it. Whereas livejournal's friends page makes it very easy to keep up with folks. It's an ease of interface thing. I can just go to one page every day, and see what's up.

I've never quite had your feelings about privacy, though. (I'd known you online for, what, 6 years before I knew your last name?) It's quite possible that there's a very good reason behind the other journal that's not something that would occur to me.

A large part of it is the predating: I've had the passworded one on MIT for a while, and it's comfortable, and I don't feel like learning a new system here on livejournal for passworded posting.

Also, if I set up a private journal here on livejournal, my friends who don't have lj accounts won't be able to read it. And I like having access to my entries as files; it means I can move them, remove them, grep them, or copy them to my hard drive with a minimum of fuss.

That's most of it, I think.

Ack!

I'm truly sorry and embarassed to have been so thoughtless. Instead of going on and on about how badly I feel, I'll just say: You have my deepest and most abject apologies.
