I don't post all that much about politics, because I'm keeping a journal (read: meme page) and not a blog, but this article by the Democratic Leadership Council, explaining what they think a Democratic candidate for president needs, is a little frightening. And a little Republican. (Thanks to Will Shetterly for the link.)

To say nothing of the fact that the article ends by saying:

Fringe candidates who devalue the Democratic Party's currency will be long gone. The cacophony of candidate voices will be reduced to one. When the nominee goes head to head with the President, Democrats will have the clarity of message for which we now long.

Democrats can take back the White House in 2004, but only if they live up to their party's true traditions, and stand up for the values, aspirations, and security of the decent, hard-working, G-d-fearing people that made this country and the Democratic Party great. The winning path may not be easy, but it runs straight.

I used to think we needed a third party in this country; now I think we need a second. I'll be interested to see who manages to win my vote in 2004.

This is where I reference my past ten years of complaints about the Republicrats and then get bitter and frustrated and punch random strangers.

Hmm. So the DLC appears to be against big ideas and smart people, but it isn't clear from this policy statement what they might be *for*. No Democrat, "new" or "old," is going to do much for the country by marching along silently to the tune of the national anthem.

Perhaps the DLC has concluded that the "decent, hard working, God-fearing" rank and file are so thoroughly dense that there's no point in having concrete platforms or policies. The trick now is to assure them in a sufficiently "mom and apple pie" tone of voice that you respect them and really just want what they want (whatever this might be-- cable television? alcohol? internet porn?).

Howard Dean is the only serious contender I see with genuine ideas and a willingness to risk disagreeing with mainstream ideas. If you think the DLC's comments are scary, he's a good one to look at.

If you vote for Dean, I'll make you a cookie.

Assuming Jamie gets back to me with the details, I'll be doing some computer work for MassForDean next week. Have already contributed $$ to the campaign, and plan to do pretty much whatever else I can reasonably do to help.

I've sat idle through too many election run-ups only to watch the one decent candidate lose his chance. It could happen to Dean too, but I'm not going to sit on my butt again and watch it.

Right--as far as these comments go (and don't think for a second I don't want the cookie), I'll very likely vote for Dean in November if he's on the ballot. My worry is who to vote for if the DLC gets their way and he doesn't get the nomination.

I feel the same. Which is why I'm getting involved *now*, when it's starting to be worked out who does end up on the ballot.

If I were a proselytizing kind of person, I'd encourage you to do so too. But I'm not even sure I can spell it, let alone do it, so I'll just spread information and my own opinions, and leave folks to make their own choices.
