Help from the musically inclined
Jun. 16th, 2003 04:33 amSo I'm still thinking, as I did five years ago, of making a "Hellmix"--a CD based on Dante's Inferno. Because, er, it seemed like a good idea at the time, I guess.
But I realize now that I just don't really know that much music. So I appeal to those of you who do...
What I have so far, tentatively, is:
And then "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Rolling Stones, and then, I think, "Stars" from Les Mis.
So advice and suggestions are welcome.
But I realize now that I just don't really know that much music. So I appeal to those of you who do...
What I have so far, tentatively, is:
- Hell, Squirrel Nut Zippers
- ??? (Circle 1, the Pagans. There's always "The Christians and the Pagans," but it's not really right...it should be more a song about the Virtuous Pagans. You know, either the Biblical forefathers, or the Greek and Roman poets.)
- St. Augustine in Hell, Sting (Circle 2, the Lustful. A no-brainer, I think.)
- ??? (Circle 3, the Gluttons. One of Weird Al's food songs?)
- Money, the Beatles? Money, from Cabaret? (Circle 4, the Misers and the Squanderers)
- Angry Young Man, Billy Joel (Circle 5, the Wrathful--OK, also the Sullen, but who ever recorded a song about being sullen?)
- G-d, Tori Amos (Circle 6, the Heretics)
- ??? (Circle 7, and now things get harder, because this circle is in three parts. One song about violence? Or one about murderers and warmongers, one about suicides, and one about blasphemers and sodomizers? One song about all three wouldn't be so bad, but that means 'an Irish ballad,' and I'm not sure that's what I want. Maybe "The Man's Too Strong" by Dire Straits, since it's sort of a warmongering song?)
- ??? (Circle 8, and what a mess this circle is. Probably easier to do just one or two songs about fraud, than to do one each for: Panders and seducers, Flatterers, Simonists, Fortune Tellers,
Hypocrites, Thieves, Evil counselors, Sowers of Discord, Alchemists, Impersonators, Counterfeiters, False Witnesses. Though I could perhaps throw in Cream's "Tales of Brave Ulysses," since he's in there. But I can't think of any really good songs about people being fraudulent. "Nobody's on Nobody's Side" from Chess?) - ??? (Circle 9, Traitors, and it may just come down to Judas singing "I Don't Know How To Love Him.")
And then "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Rolling Stones, and then, I think, "Stars" from Les Mis.
So advice and suggestions are welcome.

Date: 2003-06-16 04:07 am (UTC)"Sullen Girl" -- Fiona Apple.
Personally, I think I'd use "Smut" -- for The Lustful.
"Beef Jerky" by Cibo Matto may also work for Gluttony ("My weight is 300 pounds . . .")
My friend suggests anything by The Smiths for Level 5; "Knoxville Girl" or "Stagger Lee" by Nick Cave for Level 7; and "The Whores Hustle And The Hustlers Whore" by PJ Harvey for level 8.

Date: 2003-06-16 06:46 am (UTC)Oh, "Eat It", definitely!
Panders and seducers, Flatterers, Simonists, Fortune Tellers, Hypocrites, Thieves, Evil counselors, Sowers of Discord, Alchemists, Impersonators, Counterfeiters, False Witnesses.
"Alas for You" from Godspell? You probably hate Godspell, though.

Date: 2003-06-16 07:21 am (UTC)Circle 4: "The Money Kept Rolling In" from Evita
Circle 7: Well, if you want one about murderers, I could give you a copy of "I Could Love You Every Day (A Killer Song)" from one of my Monkey Puzzle CDs.
Circle 8: "Would I Lie to You?" or Depeche Mode, "Lie to Me"
Circle 9: Judas doing "Heaven on Their Minds" might be better -- he only sings a little snippet of "I Don't Know How to Love Him" at the end of his suicide song.

And you could do worse than "Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner" for circle 7.

6: I'd use 'Borderline' if you're going to use Billy Joel.
7: Dear G*d, XTC.
8: Roland the Thomson Gunner, Warren Zevon. Where the Wild Roses Grow, Nick Cave.
9: That's a Lie, by Too Much Joy. Liar, by Henry Rollins. Would I Lie To You, Eurhythmics. (I dare you to find a song about simonists.)
10:
I'm sure we could fit in 'Sweet and Tender Hooligan' or 'Only a Lad' somewhere.
Augh. Have to go to work.

Date: 2003-06-16 01:24 pm (UTC)I really think you ought to use some song by Tool for circle 8, since violence and sodomy and blasphemy is right up their alley, but I don't know their stuff well enough to pick a particular song.
I'm asking

Date: 2003-06-16 02:12 pm (UTC)Sullen: "I'm Only Happy When It Rains" Not sure who it's by, but it's pretty self-righteously evilly sullen.
Heretics: Blasphemous Rumors, Depeche Mode
The song about a Jerry Springer-like talk show off Peter Gabriel's new album definitely fits in here somewhere.
"Facade" from the Jekyll &Hyde musical, for fraudulence? And there are other good ones somewhere, I know there are.
"End of the World", U2, is about Judas (sorta).
Oh, how about "Roxanne" by the Police?

Date: 2003-06-16 08:25 pm (UTC)As for money, The Flying Lizards' cover of "Money (That's What I Want)" or of course you could go with the original, though it's not as fun.
Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" is a good warmongering song.
