Help from the musically inclined
Jun. 16th, 2003 04:33 amSo I'm still thinking, as I did five years ago, of making a "Hellmix"--a CD based on Dante's Inferno. Because, er, it seemed like a good idea at the time, I guess.
But I realize now that I just don't really know that much music. So I appeal to those of you who do...
What I have so far, tentatively, is:
And then "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Rolling Stones, and then, I think, "Stars" from Les Mis.
So advice and suggestions are welcome.
But I realize now that I just don't really know that much music. So I appeal to those of you who do...
What I have so far, tentatively, is:
- Hell, Squirrel Nut Zippers
- ??? (Circle 1, the Pagans. There's always "The Christians and the Pagans," but it's not really right...it should be more a song about the Virtuous Pagans. You know, either the Biblical forefathers, or the Greek and Roman poets.)
- St. Augustine in Hell, Sting (Circle 2, the Lustful. A no-brainer, I think.)
- ??? (Circle 3, the Gluttons. One of Weird Al's food songs?)
- Money, the Beatles? Money, from Cabaret? (Circle 4, the Misers and the Squanderers)
- Angry Young Man, Billy Joel (Circle 5, the Wrathful--OK, also the Sullen, but who ever recorded a song about being sullen?)
- G-d, Tori Amos (Circle 6, the Heretics)
- ??? (Circle 7, and now things get harder, because this circle is in three parts. One song about violence? Or one about murderers and warmongers, one about suicides, and one about blasphemers and sodomizers? One song about all three wouldn't be so bad, but that means 'an Irish ballad,' and I'm not sure that's what I want. Maybe "The Man's Too Strong" by Dire Straits, since it's sort of a warmongering song?)
- ??? (Circle 8, and what a mess this circle is. Probably easier to do just one or two songs about fraud, than to do one each for: Panders and seducers, Flatterers, Simonists, Fortune Tellers,
Hypocrites, Thieves, Evil counselors, Sowers of Discord, Alchemists, Impersonators, Counterfeiters, False Witnesses. Though I could perhaps throw in Cream's "Tales of Brave Ulysses," since he's in there. But I can't think of any really good songs about people being fraudulent. "Nobody's on Nobody's Side" from Chess?) - ??? (Circle 9, Traitors, and it may just come down to Judas singing "I Don't Know How To Love Him.")
And then "Sympathy for the Devil" by the Rolling Stones, and then, I think, "Stars" from Les Mis.
So advice and suggestions are welcome.
