iTunes

I decided to download iTunes for Windows...OK, that's actually a lie, I decided to download Quicktime and discovered that it now comes with iTunes. But having downloaded the latter, albeit not really intentionally, I decided to give it a try.

I've seen it on the Mac, and I must admit I rather liked the idea of being able to sort by artist, or by album, or by name, and so on. I also liked the automatic playlist idea, and in particular I was a fan of the playlist organization--Winamp 3 was OK about it, but Winamp 2 is a little frustrating in that regard (but generally much better than Winamp 3, for a number of reasons). So I thought, sure, let me give this thing a shot.

And I must admit there are features I like. But I keep hitting these major annoyances. There are some that can't be helped: I went to the iMusic store, bought a song because it had a word in the title (I was making a thematic mix CD), and discovered on listening that the file was mislabeled in their system and they had the title wrong. Grrrr.

But there are some that can be. In particular: of my 1200 MP3s, there are literally 410 of them for which iTunes has nothing but the title. No artist, no album, nothing. And this after I spent some time editing ID3 tags in Winamp to make sure everything was right. I really, really have no wish to edit 410 more files. And since I started using this thing explicitly because of its sorting capabilities, this is a major strike against it.

(Another minor irritation: I'm starting to get really tired of having to type every keyboard shortcut twice. "control-I" brings up file info, but often, only the second time I type it...grr.)

I can't find any information online about this bug, either. Oh, well, I tried...

Hmm...I've never had any trouble with iTunes reading ID3 tags on my Mac. Must be a Windows-only issue. Or something about how Winamp edits tags vs. how iTunes does, since I edited all of mine in iTunes? But that seems unlikely.

For me, iTunes has completely different problems, such as the fact that having a "Library" separate from your music folder is stupid, stupid, stupid. (Does it work that way on the Windows version, too?)
