For ten points, what do the following songs have in common?

  • "No Retreat, No Surrender", Bruce Springsteen

  • "Johnny B. Goode", Chuck Berry

  • "Won't Back Down", Tom Petty

  • "Simply the Best", Tina Turner

  • "Closer to Free", Bodeans

  • "Young American", David Bowie

  • "Elevation", U2

  • "All Right Now", Free

They've all been played at the DNC.

That's not a bad soundtrack. I wonder what the Republicans will be playing.

For those who thought "played at the DNC", it's actually a little more specific: they're the songs that played as John Kerry got off the boat and greeted the crowd upon his arrival in Boston today.

Many of those have showed up at the DNC, too. Did you notice that Bill Clinton got "Don't Stop" by Fleetwood Mac? Put a tear in my eye thinking about '92.

I did indeed notice. The theme music at the DNC has been a little haphazard: the fifty-something California representative who got surfing music; the woman who got "Spill the Wine", not what I think of as political music.

On the other hand, "Mole, digging in a hole..." just doesn't make me think "John Kerry", so.

huh. i was going to say 'they're the songs that i just listened to get played over and over while i stood out in the damp for three and a half hours.' but then i realized that you didn't have 'break on through', 'beautiful day', or 'mrs. robinson'.

I believe they also played "Hey Ya" as the boat approached.
