Wisdom from Colin Quinn tonight's "Tough Crowd with Colin Quinn":

  • The "forty acres and a mule" promise was made by Lincoln. (Not remotely true; the promise was made by Sherman. Al Sharpton claimed that "Mr. Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation, after which there was a commitment to give forty acres and a mule"; so the misinformation was all Colin's.)

  • Speakers at the convention kept talking about the economy and never mentioned 9/11. (I'd ask if he was watching the same convention that I was watching, but I doubt he was watching.)

I watch this show because (a) it's occasionally amusing, especially when the comedians rip on each other, and (b) it's on between the 1:00 am rerun of the Daily Show and the 2:00 am showing of Family Guy, so it keeps me occupied. But man, Colin's an idiot.

Yeah, but Colin was out-idioted by Ellen Cleghorne, who insisted that the 40 acres and a mule promise was in the Constitution, specifically the 16th amendment (http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitution.amendmentxvi.html).

But I agree it's occasionally amusing (in fact pretty often because of their idiocy). Greg Giraldo's pretty smart, though. I wish they would show more of the fake press conference at the end with Ken Ober, but maybe that's just my Remote Control nostalgia.

Oh, indeed, that idiocy wasn't lost on me, either.

And it's true, there are occasional bits of intelligence--the quote at the end of my Ann Coulter rant came from the show.
