One of the reasons I'm not going to this year's crossword tournament in Stamford, CT, is that I have a conference the following weekend, though money was a factor as well. I just reserved a room for that conference...
The Stamford rooms are, as I recall, $84/night, which is the tournament rate. Three nights would be $252, or perhaps $126 if I shared the room with someone.
The room in Vancouver is $79/night, which is just their regular rate, not their convention rate. And they have a "stay two nights, get one free" special. Which means that three nights, alone, is $158. Canadian. Which is about $128 American.
So for the price of a shared room in Stamford, CT, I'm getting a room by myself in Vancouver. I love Canada. (Of course, transportation is more expensive. But then, registration is cheaper.)
