TV Meme, Completed
Apr. 8th, 2005 01:37 amAnd now the answers to the TV meme. Which is, frankly, the interesting part, much as I of course love watching you guys guess. :-)
1. Buffy. Two guesses for Buffy (too easy), one for Giles (who I love, certainly), two for Xander (oh, sure, he's OK), and one for Willow (mmmm, redhead)...but those who know my Buffywatching best, Jadelennox and my wife, knew that I adore Anya. Because she tries so hard, and she almost, almost understands the human thing, and she's so adorable when she doesn't. And because bunnies scare her. When the writers lost touch with the characters in Season Six, it was their bastardized Anya that I felt most betrayed by.
2. Babylon 5. One of many shows on the list where I think I like the character interactions more than I like the characters. Votes for Garibaldi, G'Kar, and Ivanova--and all good guesses, better than Delenn or Sheridan or Sinclair or Kosh or pretty much anyone else, except perhaps Marcus--but my heart is, now and forever, with Londo. (Note: I still haven't seen the fifth season. I don't think it'll change my mind.) The real answer is "the G'Kar/Londo relationship" (and no, not that kind of relationship), but--like Anya, perhaps--Londo tries so hard. And fails so badly. And hates that he fails.
3. Iron Chef America, not popular among guessers. William Shatner isn't on this version, buster. Understand that I love Alton Brown on Good Eats, and sure, Morimoto's cute and all, but Mario Batali's just so funny.
4. Judging Amy, another one most people didn't know. Sure, what they did with Rehnquist was great (I loved the exploration of his alternate sexuality), but. No, the real reason I like the show is...um...you know, I don't really know why I like this show. But I do think Maxine (Tyne Daly) is my favorite of the characters, because she's--like me--not really a very nice person. Well, she looks after foster children, but she's gruff and short-tempered and resists authority. (Probably a close second is Ignatio, Cheech Marin's character. Yeah, Cheech is on the show. See what you're missing?) Once again, kudos to my wife for knowing.
5. Law and Order. Special guest stars do nothing for me, and Dianne Wiest did less--very annoying character. But no, I mostly watch the show for Lenny Briscoe (Jerry Orbach). I miss Jerry.
6. Family Guy. Three guesses for Stewie, two for Brian. (And none for Lois? I'm so in love with Alex Borstein. But no, Lois isn't my favorite character, even so.) I think my favorite character is Brian. My wife tells me it's Stewie. You decide who to trust.
7. Cheers--another one which is really about the character interactions and the ensemble. No guesses for Frasier or Lilith, who might be high up on my list--but, really, it's Norm. Everyone else gets to show that they're fundamentally decent people, but Norm is always mild-mannered, always kind of genial, and his really telling characteristic is that, for all that he makes light of Vera, it comes up again and again how much he really does love her. There's a lot to be said for that.
8. NextGen. Probably a mistake to include (but, really, "Quantum Leap" doesn't give much to go on, does it?), because the characters are all...so...flat. Worf's OK, but better on DS9; it sure as hell isn't Troi (but man she made a good Romulan); Data's too forced...really, in the end, Picard is the only one with any real depth. And most of the acting talent.
9. Futurama. Points off for guessing Zap Brannigan; he gives me the creeps. Big blond guy in a red suit who's constantly doing selfish, self-centered things and getting away with it. Bah. Zoidberg's too pathetic--why did everyone seem to think I'd like him? And Bender's a sociopath, and I have a hard time getting behind him. No, it could have been Hermes, it might even have been Mom...but I think it has to go to Turanga Leela. For one thing, she's sexy; for another, she (like Anya?) tries so hard to be cool and just can't pull it off. The real answer, again, is "the Fry-Leela relationship"; Fry's too much of a loser for me to like, but I love his dedication to Leela.
10. The Venture Brothers, and I'm not sure why I watch the show, either...no, wait, I am. It's because all of the characters are great--Dr. Venture with his utter sarcastic disregard for the genre he's supposed to be in, The Monarch for his incompetence, Dean and Hank for their ludicrous embracing of their genre, Doctor Ooooorpheus (the melodrama kills me!). But it's all about Patrick Warburton--Brock Samson. He walks the perfect line between being part of the genre, with his square jaw and his constant cigarette and his ultra-serious tone and his ability to sleep with any woman he meets (Molotov Cocktease, mrrrow! Talk about your hot 'toons), and brushing off the brothers' overenthusiasm. It's the tone, really. Warburton just plays him as so. darned. serious. It's perfect.
As for Home Movies--Walter and Perry scare me a little. And Coach McGurk? Big blond guy in a red suit who's constantly doing selfish, self-centered things and getting away with it. Bah.
There. More than you possibly wanted to know about my TV viewing habits. But perhaps the discussion gave you some crucial insight into my soul. Me, I'm going to bed.

Ivanova: Byron, how does someone living at the sub-poverty level have such beautiful, lustrous hair?
Byron: I never take two bottles into the shower.
Other telepaths: Can we do that really cool song again?
