Those truly fine moments
Aug. 29th, 2005 11:22 pmWe went to see Brothers Grimm yesterday. It was all right; Gilliam's done better. Some pacing problems; also some truly wonderful moments.
During the credits, which of course we sat and watched, we noticed quite a few foreign names, and
jadelennox guessed--quite rightly--that it had been filmed in the Czech Republic. So we sat, and watched, and of course made fun of some of the names in the credits (because, come on, Ditch Doy; how could you not?).
But a couple of thirteen-year-old boys behind us were, er, louder about it. And were saying, "Heh heh, look at these stupid names. How come people in movies never have real names? 'Jiri Krejcir'. 'Andrej Kostic'. 'Viera Zvonarova'." It was annoying, to say the least, and we began muttering to each other--"Yeah, wow, I bet no one in the Czech Republic really has a name like that. So obviously made up."
Finally I couldn't take it any more. I turned around and said, "Look, my family is Czechoslovakian, so I'd appreciate if you didn't make fun of their names."
The rest of the credits we watched in silence, punctuated only by
jadelennox's stifled giggles, and my wife saying, "Hey, is your uncle's name in there?" as a series of Czech names scrolled by.
