Why do my arms hurt?

Oh, right. Because I went down to the bank and deposited 33 pounds yesterday.

Note to British readers: not pounds sterling; 33 pounds of coins, or as it's called in the UK, "15 kilos". Worth about $200, and weighing about as much as a small child, or as it's called in the UK, "a wee bairn".

Well, certainly, it will depend on the child. More accurate would be "a moderately small child". Even more accurate would be that 33 pounds of coins weighs as much as "a 33-pound child", but you start to lose some of the force of the analogy at that point.

reminds me of the entry in the widely-circulated Style Invitational for analogies: "He was as tall as a six-foot three-inch tree"

Wow, two cats of loose change. Or, as they say in cities without so much Maine Coon in the feline gene pool, three cats of loose change.

My 2.5 year old weighs almost 40 pounds. (He's also simply big for his age. People tend to think he's 3.5 going on 4 -- which is too bad, because they expect his behavior to match their expectation, and it doesn't.)

The good thing is -- and you might take comfort from it -- is that your arms don't hurt as much, because you start carrying the kid when they're somewhere between 5 and 11 lbs. So it's gradual. But the arms still hurt occasionally.
