There's something cool about being in a fabric store to buy large sheets of foam, and to see another couple buying large sheets of foam, and to sort of know that you're both there for the same geek-based reason. (Well, actually, they turned out to be getting packing material for gaming things. But still, you could see the lack of surprise when they asked what we were getting the foam for, and we said, "Swords.")

And then being at a craft store, and having the clerk at the next counter come around to look at your T-shirt, to find out which LARPing group you're with. (By the way: Jodi? Jet says hi.)

On the other hand, spoiler-paranoid dork that I am, I'm starting to hate a meme that says, "When you see this meme, post a quote from Firefly." I know, I know, they're just quotes, but I really have found my enjoyment of, say, a Buffy episode somewhat diminished when a cool quote comes up and I'm like, yeah, heard that, that's nothing new. (It's kind of how I felt about This is Spinal Tap. The second time through, I really liked it. The first time through, I was like, yeah, yeah, up to eleven, I've already laughed at that.)

People shouldn't use cut tags for these; that'd be silly. It's my own fault for not having watched Firely yet. It just means I have to skim a little faster past some entries.

As far my friends list, all the quotes have been from already-aired episodes, not from the movie.

Yes, I know, but the point is that I haven't seen them.

Yeah, I feel similarly about quotes from things I haven't seen.

One of my coworkers has a terrible habit of asking "Has anyone seen last night's Daily show?" Invariably, I say, "It's on my TiVo, I haven't watched it yet." (I'm old, I usually go to bed around when it airs.) And so, he goes on to tell the funniest joke, which isn't nearly as funny when I hear it on the show.

(I've tried getting him to stop, but it hasn't worked, so now I just grab my headphones when he starts his spoilage. I wonder if he'll ever get the hint.)

Okay, that was just an opportunistic tangent rant. I feel better now.

I'm pretty sure this is why I'm not much of a Monty Python fan. I have to admit the show is really quite funny, but I had basically heard all of their sketches, inexpertly delivered, many times before I ever got a chance to watch the actual show. It took a lot of the zip out of it.

Python fans really take it to the next level (or concentric circle of, whichever). I was entirely unable to watch The Holy Grail through and some years after college, because of this sort of thing, and still have no interest in actually having it in my library. Bad dorm memories of a cluster of yokels camped out in the hall, more or less reciting the entire thing at each other and cackling like hyenas.

Some dumb memes need to be dumb in the other sense.
