i hate the mbta.

i mean, i really fucking hate the mbta.

i just stood outside in the cold for an hour and a half, because i had two really important can't-miss-this things to do at mit. and because the visibility was so bad i couldn't walk to davis. and there was supposed to be a 2:40 bus to davis. and then a 3:10. and then a 3:40. and then a 4:00. and there wasn't. and i really, really hate the mbta.

Having been out in the weather around that time, I find it entirely plausible that the busses were in fact on their way and were simply unable to get there. I watched several busses spend multiple light cycles crawling the intersection at Malden Center, for example. Traffic on faster roads than any near Davis never got over 20 MPH; usually not over 15; sometimes closer to 5. The radio was reporting parts of major highways to be impassable around that time, and I can believe it.

Not that this makes your problem any easier to bear, but it is possible that the MBTA was making the best attempt possible under the circumstances and failing anyway.

Actually, while that is a good theory, it is unlikely that was the problem since two Clarendon Hill 89's came by during that time. If the buses can make it from Sulivan to Clarendon Hill, they certainly can go from Sullivan to Davis.

Hm. That does sound plausible. It's possible that the busses you were waiting for were coming from somewhere else before reaching Sullivan (or, in this case, /failing/ to reach Sullivan), but that is indeed getting shaky. Or, somewhat more likely, that the bus drivers were stuck in traffic trying to get to work.

Oh well. It's not like the MBTA doesn't actually suck from time to time.

sorry, but bullshit, because first, AN HOUR AND A HALF, ad second, because as my wife said, other buses from sullivan to where i was came by.

Crappers! I was actually just thinking how awesome the MBTA was, for the 69 and the 86 getting me to and from Harvard painlessly. I'm very sorry they failed you, though.

when i lived in malden i grew to hate the MBTA too, for this very reason. the whole thing falls apart at the slightest hint of weather. urgh.

Or Sunday. When it even looks like there might be a hint of Sunday in the air the bus switches to a la-di-da-whee! schedule. (One would think the schedule labeled "Sunday Schedule" would help one during such days, and one would be wrong.)

It'd be nice if there were regularly updated electronic billboards at the T stations and bus stops, with next eta etc. like at airports or Amtrak? Or a website...

How about a phone number we can call on our cellphones? Why can't the operators at the MBTA help line see a computer display of where every bus in the system is, on a nice map? And be able to provide answers like "the next outbound bus is currently at MassAve and Waterhouse St.; it was at the previous stop 1 minute before"?

If it makes you feel any better (but why should it?) you're an adult. At least one elementary school bus in Lexington yesterday was stuck in a snow bank for more than an hour before anybody (driver? dispatcher?) thought to call any of the parents, so the kids sat there, worried and cold.
If you couldn't see to walk to Davis, how was the bus driver supposed to see to *drive*?

Slowly and carefully, same as all the other bus drivers who passed me. (Also, without ice blowing into their faces, which was, more than the visibility, the real problem.)

Not that it mitigates the situation, but you can file for a refund (in the form of 2 tokens) at http://www.mbta.com/contact_us/onlinereply.asp.
