So I need something that satisfies the following criteria:
  • It's a list of names that appear in a work of non-Earth-based fiction (see below),

  • Preferably all names, not just major characters,

  • The longer the book/series, the better (some possibilities: Wheel of Time, Belgariad/Mellorean, Dragaera, Valdemar, Thomas Covenant, etc.),

  • Separated by gender (or separable, e.g. a list with gender tagged in an easy-to-spot format).

If you're the sort of dedicated fan who has such a list lying around, or who wants to generate one, or who knows where one can be found on the Internet, let me know.

("Non-Earth-based", incidentally, means "that does not mostly take place on either Earth or a reasonable facsimile". Guy Gavriel Kay's pseudo-history fantasies are Earth-based, by this criteria, as is any urban fantasy; but not Thomas Covenant, which starts on Earth and drifts away rather quickly. I mention written fantasy here, but TV shows would do, as would SF, provided that they're (a) sufficiently long and (b) sufficiently non-Earth-based. Or at least that the characters are non-Earth-based; a comprehensive list of Trek aliens might work.)

Do you need just one, or as many as possible?

As many as possible.

Well, its not easy to separate, but if you get stuck I have both the _Narnia comnpanion_ and the _Valdemar_ equivilent - basically encyclopedias of the world with all of the characters in them. One would have to go sort through the book though to make the list you want.

I just might, at that. I'm hoping to avoid insane amounts of typing, but in a pinch, I can.

I once came across exactly this on Wikipedia, for GRRM's Big Thing, though it fails the last criterion. I imagine that there are similar pages for other series elsewhere in WP.

I think the last criterion is the most important one for Tahnan's purposes.

It is indeed. It's not too hard to find lists of names made by fans; it's the gender-separation that I need.

Well, you could to a heuristically-based analysis to try to guess which names are male and which... oh, right.

When do you need the lists by? In case I decided to take it on as a project in my copious spare time?

It sounds like you're going to do something interesting with the information... can I ask what?

What about non-human Earth-based societies, such as that in Watership Down?

Insofar as the rabbits have names that are almost exclusively English words, it's not helpful for my purposes.

There are lots of other books like that, though, so would that work?

Hmm. I'll grab "The Dragonbone Chair" for in-flight reading and try to get that out for you.
