It turns out that one thing "tharn" actually is is a term from Watership Down, hence the first quote.

Googling for Tharn turned up the plot of a 1991 Angus Wells novel, which was mildly interesting.

Oh dear. Now people are sticking their heads into my office to see why I'm giggling. (Context: The first, last and only time I've sung "Let There Be Peace On Earth" was as part of the Christmas Pops, where it was a sing-along-with-the-audience thing.
